Borrowing Policies CSUSM Student

Eligibility

  • Must be a current CSUSM student (Graduate/Doctoral Student, Teaching Associate/Graduate Assistant, Undergraduate Student)
  • Must have physical or digital CSUSM ID

Loan Limits

  • CSUSM Students – may have up to 40 items checked out at any given time 

Requesting Items

  • May request items from the CSUSM general collection
  • May request items from other CSU collections (CSU+)
  • May request items from library collections worldwide through Interlibrary Loan (ILL)

Loan Periods

  • CSUSM General Collection materials and CSU+ – 16 weeks
  • CSUSM Library Equipment – varies from 3 hours to 1 day based on the type of equipment
  • CSUSM Game Collection – 3 weeks
  • CSUSM Library Reserves – varies from 2 hours to 3 weeks based on the loan period assigned 
  • Interlibrary Loan – varies based on the lending library 

Renewals

  • CSUSM General Collection - one 16-week renewal
  • CSUSM Library Equipment - no renewals
  • CSUSM Game Collection - no renewals
  • CSUSM Library Reserves - no renewals
  • CSU + items - no renewals
  • Interlibrary Loan - varies based on the lending library

Overdue, Lost, & Damaged Items

If your account has fines exceeding $10, you will not be able to check out any items until the balance is cleared. A hold will be applied to your myCSUSM account for lost items until they are either returned or paid. Please contact us at 760-750-4348 or visit us at the Circulation and Reserves Desk on the 3rd floor of the Library to help resolve any issues.

Overdues

  • CSUSM General Collection & CSU+ – no overdue fees
  • CSUSM Library Reserves, CSUSM Library Equipment, and CSUSM Game Collection – $1.00 per hour/day based on the loan period up to a maximum overdue fee of $25.00
  • Interlibrary Loan - no overdue fees

Excessive Use Fee

  • A $25 excessive use fee may be placed on library accounts for Library Reserve material or library equipment that have been checked out for an extended period.

Lost/Billed and Damaged Items

Overdue items are billed and considered “lost” 14 days after due date. A $10 non-refundable billing fee is applied to each lost item. 

  • CSUSM General Collection – actual replacement cost
  • CSUSM Library Equipment – actual replacement cost 
  • CSUSM Game Collection – actual replacement cost
  • CSUSM Library Reserves – actual replacement cost
  • CSU+ items – $90 lost replacement
  • Interlibrary Loan – $90 lost replacement

*In some situations, a replacement copy may be accepted in lieu of the replacement cost, check with the Library Circulation Desk. 

Paying Fines and Fees

  • All payments for library fines must be made online.
