Secondary Sources Assignment
Secondary published resources for your marketing assignment.
Your assignment familiarizes you with customer analysis sources. Many sources are available free from goverment and some are only available through business and marketing databases or reports. A sampling is available to the academic market via the library website. Look to the tabs in this research guide to guide you with this assignment.
Secondary research is faster and cheaper than primary. Knowledge of when and how to apply both are needed for customer analysis.
There are two kinds of sources: Freely available sources such as government and organization/association websites.
- Government sources-- demographics
- Free web --free survey sites, association pages.
Subscription databases are access through the library and are free to currently enrolled students.
- News Articles--Back issues from hundreds of trade magazines in Proquest ABI Inform; Factiva; Lexis Nexis etc.

Census and Government Sources:
Statistical Abstract of the United States of the United States Quick look up to fast facts. By topic, employment, demographics, business enterprises, labor, population, health, etc.

American Community Survey is an annual survey on demographics that updates the dicennial census.
An excellent source for customer demographics is the U.S. Census especially the yearly American Community Survey which samples population characteristics. The kinds of information collected by the U.S. Census Bureau supports the work of and is used by federal, state, and local government agencies such as, Bureau of Economic Analysis, Department of Transportation, Health and Human Services, Internel Revenue Service, Department of Labor etc.

In San Diego the local arm of the Census is SanDAG the San Diego Association of Governments which takes census data and inteprets and augments the data for local economic and land use and transportation planning

Google can be an effective tool to locate some public data.
"Search demographic terms like population or unemployment rate, followed by a county, state or country, and you'll get instant data about your chosen location directly from the U.S. Census Bureau and the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The result will yield a chart from the US Census.
When you select this chart, additonal data and filters are provided. You can then compare geographical regions, time periods, and demographics.
There is also a Google Public Data Explorer This link allows you to access the different public (US and Global) datasets for searching. You can search across all OR select a specific dataset.

Common Business Citation Styles in APA Format
How to Cite in Text:
Cite as (last name or company name, year, page number). Example: (Longboard Grotto, 2009, p.23)
Example:
She stated, "Students often had difficulty using APA style" (Jones, 1998, p. 199), but she did not offer an explanation as to why.
According to Jones (1998), "Students often had difficulty using APA style, especially when it was their first time" (p. 199).

Look to trade association pages on the free web. Many industry and news reports will identify them. Some information is available free, but most are only available to members. Get around this by searching the association name for news reports in the above databases. Examples of trade and professional associations are the National Restaurant Association; American Library Association.
