Internships are available for Masters in Library and Information Science (MLIS) students depending on applicant interest, current projects, and supervising librarian availability. Students encouraged to propose internship projects based on interest and experience.  This application is for current library school students or people who just recently finished earning their library degree (within 12 months of applying for internship).

CSUSM University Library Teaching Fellowship

The CSUSM University Library Teaching Fellowship offers MLIS students classroom teaching experience critical for successful entrance into the profession, specifically in an academic classroom setting.

The fellowship requires a commitment of approximately ten hours per week over the semester, but those hours can be done both in-person and virtually. The Teaching Fellowship will provide a stipend of $750.00 to one outstanding candidate.

Goals and Objectives

The Teaching Fellowship will enable the appropriate candidate to take an active role in the teaching and learning of information literacy skills in the First Year Experience program at CSU San Marcos. Specifically, the Teaching Fellow will collaborate closely with librarians within the Teaching and Learning Department (T&L) teaching the library sessions for GEL 101 (General Education Lifelong Learning), GEO 102 (General Education Oral Communication) and GEW 101 (General Education Writing), and other courses as needed. The Teaching Fellow will help design information literacy curriculum, lesson plans, and will assist in teaching.

Eligibility/Qualifications

Candidates for the Teaching Fellowship must:

  • demonstrate genuine interest in and/or experience with teaching
  • demonstrate genuine interest in academic librarianship
  • have excellent oral and written communication skills
  • have complete core courses in their MLIS program
  • fulfill qualifications for a practicum/internship for their MLIS program

Application Process

After the applicant submits the following, they will be interviewed by the fellowship coordinator. 

  • CV or Resume
  • Statement of Interest
  • Copy of transcripts, including GPA
  •  2 letters of recommendations 

Fellowship Requirements

The Teaching Fellow will:

  • work with a library faculty mentor to create learning goals, design and implement curriculum/lesson plans, and assist with instruction as appropriate;
  • conduct research in an area of teaching and learning related to the student’s interest and their work at CSUSM (see below for more)
  • provide reference and research help via the Research Help Desk
  • give a professional presentation at a meeting of CSUSM Library Faculty, Dean and Associate Dean that describes the parameters and finding it
  • respond to emails and participate in library and campus meetings, events and other opportunities as appropriate in addition to Fellowship responsibilities, complete necessary paperwork for practicum/internship credit

Research Project and Presentation

In addition to teaching, Teaching Fellows will also conduct research on a topic agreed upon by both the Fellow and their mentor, and complete a literature review to present to the library faculty. Teaching Fellows will give a 20-30 minutes presentation describing their Fellowship research project and how the findings relate to information literacy, student learning, and academic librarianship. The presentation will be followed by 10-15 minutes for question and answers with the Library Faculty.
