Description

When President Vladimir Putin of Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, along with the rest of the world, I was appalled. Sparked by Graphis' call for entries in the Designers for Peace competition, plus a strong desire to _do something_, I was reminded of a segment on Putin from “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver,” where they show clips of everyday Russians falling prey to propaganda and worshipping Putin like a mega-celebrity.
This project aimed to point out to the Russian people that they are revering a fraud, a false god.

The biblical story of the Golden Calf was the perfect allegory for what I wanted to convey. I found 3D artist Roberto Vescovi online and collaborated with him to sculpt the bust of Putin. We made him look angry and menacing, the opposite of what his well-tuned press machine reveals to the Russian public.
The image was released online on social media and submitted to the Graphis competition. In addition, I reached out to a printer in Kyiv and had them print copies and post them in the city. Finally, I had a small run screen-printed using blue, red, black, and metallic gold inks.
