Teaching Fellowship Application


Information Literacy Program (ILP) Teaching Fellowship

The Teaching Fellowship offers MLIS students valuable, hands-on experience critical for successful entrance into the profession, specifically in an academic classroom setting. Each spring, summer, and fall semester, the Teaching Fellowship will provide a stipend of $750.00 to one outstanding candidate, requiring a commitment of approximately 135 hours during that semester.

Goals and Objectives

The Teaching Fellowship will enable the appropriate candidate to take an active role in the teaching and learning of information literacy skills at Cal State San Marcos. Specifically, the Library Fellow will collaborate closely with ILP librarians teaching the library module of GEL 101 (General Education Lifelong Learning) and other general education classes. The Library Fellow will help design information literacy curriculum and activities, and will assist in teaching GEL 101.  

Eligibility/Qualifications

Candidates for the Teaching Fellowship must:

  • have excellent oral and written communication skills, and demonstrate genuine interest in academic librarianship.
  • have interest in and/or experience with teaching.
  • have completed core courses in an ALA-accredited MLIS program (e.g. SJSU/Fullerton, UCLA).
  • qualify for a practicum/internship at an ALA-accredited MLIS program as part of this Fellowship.
  • reside locally in the Southern California region (on-campus commitment required).
  • submit copy of transcripts, including GPA.
  • submit updated resume.
  • submit 2 letters of recommendation, in addition to application below.

Please note: Finalists will be interviewed by library faculty in the Information Literacy Program.

Requirements

The following guidelines ensure a consistent and academically rigorous experience for all Information Literacy Program (ILP) Teaching Fellows.

In addition to following the requirements for their MLS class, the Teaching Fellow must also complete the following for CSUSM:

  • work with faculty mentor to create learning goals, design and implement curriculum/activities, and assist with instruction as appropriate.
  • respond to emails and participate in library and campus meetings, events, and other opportunities as appropriate.
  • after training and observation, student teaching is required of all Teaching Fellows with ILP supervising librarian present.
  • give a professional presentation to Librarians Roundtable describing the parameters and findings of the research project conducted during Fellowship.

Presentation

Teaching Fellows will give a 15-20 minute professional presentation at the Librarians’ Round Table describing their Fellowship research project and how the findings relate to information literacy, academic librarianship and to student learning.  The presentation will be followed by 10-15 minutes for question and answer with the Librarians. Visual aids and/or handouts are strongly encouraged.

Topics of research/project and presentation are to be determined by supervising ILP librarian and Teaching Fellow. Sample topics include:

  • Online instruction
  • DLO (Digital Learning Objects)
  • Relationship between Reference and Instruction
  • K-12 information literacy instruction
  • Social networking technologies and instruction
  • Characteristics of the “new learner”—beyond millennials
  • UDL (Universal Design for Learning)
  • Virtual reference vs. traditional reference related to student learning
  • Assessment of instruction
  • Collection development and funding related to student learning
  • Perspective of library instruction within MLS programs

Timeline

Dates for review of applications are:

  • Spring Fellowship- Due: January 8, 2010
  • Fall Fellowship- Due: July 14, 2010

Candidates will be notified of their application status within one month of submission.
