General Guidelines for Media Reserves

Guidelines

Prior to accepting for Media Reserves, materials that are clearly not supplied by a distributor will be subject to inquiry by staff.  The Media Library reserves the right to refuse to put on reserve any program for which the legality of the recording is in question.

Off-Air Recordings (not recorded from cable or pay-per-view) are for 1-time use only and may not be used again in the same or subsequent semester without written permission from the supplier.

A variety of media formats may be put on reserve in the Media Library.  The formats include the following commercial products:

• Video/DVD
• Compact discs
• DVD-ROM
• Slides
• Video taped lectures of the course instructor or student presentations of currently enrolled students.
• Legally produced materials

Video on Demand Instructions and Guidelines

We are very excited to offer Video on Demand (VOD) as part of our Reserves service in the Media Library.  The Video on Demand system allows users to view video content over the Internet from any computer. To take advantage of this service, the following information is provided. If you have a question not covered below, please contact the Media Library and we will do our best to assist you.

• How do I get started?  First read through the important information. It is meant to ensure a positive experience using our VOD reserves service.
  For each title this online Media Reserve Form is available to submit your request. There is also a printed form available in the Media Library.
• How long does this take?  All encoding is done in real time. During the beginning of a semester, staff need at least 1 week of lead time before making links available in your shells.
• I have many videos that I want on VOD. What should I do?  Prioritize your requests. They are processed in the order received.
  Due to the growing popularity of this program, we must hold each faculty member's requests to a maximum of 6 hours of recording time per week.
• What can I put on VOD?  Any film from the Library’s collection or personal copies can be used as long as they’re original copies that adhere to copyright laws.
• I recorded a TV program. Can you place on VOD?  Yes, but with restrictions. On-air recordings cannot be used for longer than 10 days due to copyright restrictions.
• What does Cougar Courses have to do with this?  A Cougar Courses shell is necessary so that a link can be added to allow students to view films either on or off campus.
• How will staff add the links to my Cougar Course shell?  You will need to provide "Designer" access to your shells.  The following link will guide you in completing this process  http://cc.csusm.edu/file.php/1/Faculty_Resources/How_to_Add_Students_or_TA.pdf
• I completed the form. What else is there to do?  We need the physical item. Personal copies must be brought to the Media Library before they will add to your shell. Media must always be put on Reserves for it to be eligible for placing on Video on Demand.
• How will I know that the links have been added?  When the films have been encoded and the process completed, you will see a link titled "Films" in the very first section of your shell.
• This is great! Can I submit videos for my non-CSUSM classes?  No. Links are not to be used for teaching at other campuses.
• So how long does my video stay on VOD?  Links for personal copies will be kept for a period of three years after use.
