The Caldecott Medal is awarded annually by the Association for Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library Association. The first medal was donated by Frederic G. Melcher (1879-1963) in 1938, and was awarded to the artist of the most distinguished American picture book for children published in the United States during the preceding year. The name of the award comes in honor of Randolph Caldecott, a 19th century English illustrator, because his works best represented the “joyousness and beauty of picture books.” The horseman on the medal is taken from one of his illustrations for “John Gilpin.”
All items are in the Juvenile section unless otherwise stated.
